This sword based on the early 19th century senior officers swords of France was purchased by a senior officer of the Haitian Army during the mid 19th century period of the Haitian Republic.
As a small nation, the armed forces was never large, numbering in the scant thousands. The numbers seem to never have exceeded approximately 10-20,000 but as with lots of revolutionary nations, it was rather top-heavy with officers This is a quality piece manufactured by Coulaux & Cie and has an incredibly intricate gilt openwork guard with chiseled details and an engraved scabbard throat.
The sword is overall in good condition with a section of beading and the chape of the scabbard absent.
