A pleasant "been there, done that" example of a British flank officers sabre. This piece has a rare guard pattern which appears to occur more on Scottish or Irish swords but I believe that to be a coincidence more than a pattern or variation. The split bar guard is more rounded than common 1796 styles but incredibly aesthetically pleasing and with the added thickness of the guard I would say it may even be more protective against crushing blows. The sabre has a rather pleasant arabesque cartouche section along much of the length of the blade with the edges styled similar to licks of flame.
There is some age related wear and pitting but overall it is an interesting and unique example of a flank officers sabre.
