Here we have a mid-18th century espada ancha, the sword of the Spanish veterans of the South American colonial wars.
This piece has a blade marked to the Toledo Dragoons and dated to 1740, on the reverse of the blade is the monarch's name, Carlos III, this sword has a mid length lenticular blade with a spear point and the characteristic ribbed circular handle and small pommel often seen on these colonial pieces (I have a Spanish rapier of the 1650's with a very similar pommel), most interesting is the guard which we can see bears similarities to the late rapiers/transitional smallswords guard with a sturdy knucklebow and bars attached.
This sword can be yours for £750 or best offer.
