A rather interesting transitional smallsword or rapier with the hilt of a smallsword and bearing the blade of a mid-17th century Spanish rapier. The piece has a cast white metal hilt with foliate decorative embellishments and a finely tapered grip with a swollen centre section. The blade however is the most interesting part with a finely tapering cut and thrust blade bearing the name of Sebastian Hernandez (shortened to Ernanez on this blade as is found on many of his potentially trade blades), the anchor mark, the crossed orb and the Jerusalem cross. Sebastian was the leader of the Hernandez dynasty of Toledo sword makers and worked approximately from 1570 to his retirement in 1600 and was succeeded by his sons Pietro and Johannes who continued making blades under Sebastian's supervision until the 1630's.
