A Silver Koftgari Indo-Persian Axe




This style of axe was commonly used by Persian horsemen and was also adopted by northern Indian Warriors in the 18th to 19th century, this example being of the mid to late 19th century.


These axes were used to devastating effect in the border conflicts by the people of North West India and the mountain tribes of Persian and Afghanistan, the axes often have a finial or hammer head behind the blade and a spike top finial. This example has silver inlay to the rear finial and spike and haft.


The axe has been polished by a previous owner.
